Vera
This poor old 1940s sheepskin Chad Valley teddy is but a shadow of her former self, as pictured in Pauline Cockrill's 'The Teddy Bear Encyclopedia'. Made during the war years, when traditional mohair was in short supply, unfortunate Vera looks as if she was also in The Blitz.
She's 11 inches tall and fully-jointed, with original amber glass eyes and a black- stitched nose and mouth, which is missing a thread. Filled with kapok, her pads are leather, and three are in reasonable condition, but one foot is surface-worn and has old stitches to secure it, along with many of her seams. Her left arm has perished, and is leaking stuffing as well as being split at the wrist.
Miraculously, Vera still has some fur left, mostly on her legs. She isn't a pretty sight
undressed, so don't look at her other pics if you're squeamish! She comes wearing her own equally tatty clothes, and old enamel badge. We've called her Vera after the wartime British singer.
